This week in APIs, the conversation looked at how API discovery has evolved alongside the way software is built and consumed.
From the centralized UDDI registries of the late 1990s to developer portals, OpenAPI specifications, and now the Model Context Protocol (MCP), every generation has changed how systems find, understand, and trust one another.
Today's shift is being driven by AI. While APIs have long been designed for human developers, AI agents require structured, machine-readable descriptions of capabilities, authentication, and behavior. Standards like OpenAPI laid the groundwork, while MCP is emerging as a way for AI systems to discover and interact with APIs autonomously.
This reflects a broader evolution in API strategy. Discoverability is no longer just about great documentation. It's about making APIs understandable, governable, and consumable by both people and intelligent systems.
The takeaway: as AI becomes an active API consumer, organizations will need to design APIs that are as discoverable by machines as they are by developers.
